Residents of Ijegun Area of Lagos State were this Thursday Morning woken up by a fire outbreak caused by petroleum pipeline vandals who had gone to scoop fuel illegally.
Reports have it that the vandals were already on their way out of the area when some security men found and chased them. In a bid to escape, the fuel tanker conveying the stole fuel was said to have fallen off the road which sparked the fire that has now killed many and destroyed properties worth millions of Naira.
Eyewitnesses said a whole street was engulfed by the fire and spreading to others as residents abandoned their home and ran to safety. The fire was said to have started around 3 A.M. on Thursday.
Members of the Lagos State Fire Service were later seen by daybreak speeding towards the scene to fight the fire, but by that time, many are reported dead. There is no official figure of casualties yet as at Press time.
This is not the first time there would be a fire outbreak caused by pipeline vandals in Ijegun causing many deaths and loss of valuables.
The Federal Government will need to take another look at the security and safety of lives and fuel pipes in Ijegun.
